Summer Vacation to Utah: Day 1

We left the house early so half the trip was done before the kids woke up and it was too hot to be comfortable. So essentially our day started with the kids waking up in Flagstaff where we made our first stop. The kids were introduced to Umicar who was traveling with us. He was our way to avoid the incessant "Are we there yet?" He traveled across the van on a ribbon with the names of some major cities that we generally stop in on our way to Utah. At each stop the kids received one of the surprises that Nicole and I had prepared ahead of time. Their first surprise was new Build-a-Bear stuffed animals. Andrew got Captain America Bear and Rory got Minnie Bear. They loved them. Some of the fun surprises we had for the kids was a roadtrip bingo game, a fishing game, a new movie from Grandma for the 4th of July (Barbie in a Mermaid Tale), snack necklaces, and 4th of July window clings.
I don't know if it was leaving at 3am or all of the fun things that we had for the kids in the car, but it seemed like one of the shortest roadtrips to Utah that we've had. We arrived at my parent's house around 4pm.  For the rest of the afternoon we just hung out and got settled in.  That night after the kids were in bed we made our first dessert.  Nicole is really into Pinterest lately and has pinned some extremely yummy looking desserts.  So we decided that each night of our vacation we would try out one of these new desserts.  The first night it was cookie dough egg rolls.  I thought they were quite delicious, but Nicole didn't love them.  It was a good start to our vacation.
